Sherick K. Guthrie
Sherick Guthrie was born in Lancaster County on November 29th, 1979 making him the youngest, but by no means the least formidable member of Animation. Ironically enough he was born in the very year that the concept of Animation was initially created. As far as early influences go, Sherick has the unusual gift of having been exposed to music prenatally by his mother, a pianist who frequently played classical pieces during her pregnancy. Since Sherick's parents were a songwriting team he was exposed very early to creative original music. As a boy Sherick began playing piano and was taking lessons at age six, and this was his first exposure to music theory. Sherick and his older brother Sean began experimenting with songwriting when they were very young and Sherick wrote his first song in 1991. At about this time Sherick began studying drum rudiments and fabricated his first kit on plastic buckets while jamming with his brother Sean who played the guitar. Due to his increasing interest in drums Sherick took a summer job with his grandfather in Florida so he could buy his first official drum kit, a '64 Ludwig Classic. From '93 to '96 he stayed with drums, but ultimately because the band "Bent" Sherick played in with his brother Sean had no bass player, Sherick switched to bass and took an eight year hiatus from the drums. At this time Sherick began to study the guitar and found a great interest in learning the music of the Beatles and the intricate vocal harmonies and harmonic structures of their style. Between the Beatles and playing in his metal band Sherick got back into his songwriting which spanned a stylistic diversity from metal to '60s folk. At some point in the history of his work with his brother and their band Sherick realized that he and his brother Sean had different visions ( Sean now plays grindcore with Endbody whose ep release ironically enough was mixed and mastered by Eric Charles at New Ocean Music Studios ) for their musical future so Sherick left the band Bent to pursue other musical interests which included returning to drums and studying jazz and improvisation styles under the accomplished direction of local drum legend Aaron Walker. Around this time Sherick found employment in a local Manheim, PA music store as a music instructor and began trading his wages for musical gear including guitars, basses and digital recorders. Sherick continued his efforts in the studio with creative songwriting and mixing techniques and formed an association with his long term good friend Dave Denisewicz in various jamming and recording formats which continue to this day. Sherick is fortunate to find happiness with his wife Laura who also shares his musical interests and enjoys playing Beatles music with her on the piano. Sherick continued his studies with a veteran jazz pianist Stanley Michalak thereby further crafting his instrumental and jazz improvisational musical pursuits. To the continued fortune of the Band Animation's vocal concepts, and as luck would have it, Sherick spent many years developing his voice by singing hymns and more modern interpretations of church vocal music in his father's church choir. He started as a baritone bass singer and developed his range into the tenor ranges as time went on. Sherick did such vocal performing in the context of duos and quartets with female vocalists and in formats of up to six part harmonies. As a child Sherick was very intrigued by the dense and complex chord tensions of the ballads of the '70 music. Dominant 7th chord harmonies were a particular favorite of Sherick's, but he continued to nurture his tastes in classical music citing the science of Mozart and Bach to be some of his particular favorites, as he enjoyed the unpredictable accidentals that occurred in those formats. Because of the frustration of not being able to replicate the complexities of certain forms of music, Sherick began to experiment with sequencing and the pursuit of original opus type creations. As marching band, piano and drum lessons were Sherick's only formal training, he has demonstrated an uncanny display of natural ability and talent. It is truly a pleasure and privilege to have Sherick as an accomplished percussionist, multi-talented instrumentalist, songwriter and arranger as the ultimate compliment and good fortune to the band Animation.
